Blizzard’s new RMT – who needs great content?

I have since tempered my reaction with rainbows and harmony. Please see my revised view on the sparkly pony here.

I know this isn’t a news blog, a WoW blog, or a ranting blog, but today, I feel this needs to be said. Also, perhaps I’m revved up on caffeine and sugar cereal.

Today, Blizzard released a new digital download item in their store. It’s a flying horse mount and it’s $25.00. Yes, that’s right, it costs half as much as an expansion.

“No one will pay that much for it”, you say as you scoff at my doomsday expression.

Orly? Well, take a look at this.

That’s right, 17,000 people were in line to buy a digital product.

There are two questions I have :

a) What need is this filling that people are willing to pay $25 for?

b) What is going to be in my next expansion now? It better be more than two new mounts.

I can already hear the crapstorm on the servers if people who are either jealous or oppose buying a mount for 25$ because they smell a bad trend for the future (less free mounts, more item shop stuff, all in all having to pay more and more money for more and more not always that optional things like this mount etc.) see a player with the new mount.

The flames and debates will be fiery for sure. The zone chat will go on a rampage.

Seriously, this shows me that MMO gaming has degenerated into devs milking an item-greedy playerbase that mostly plays singleplayer mode till they hit the squaredance phase aka raiding to get even more items to satisfy their item addiction.

People buy the mount – others are outraged: “how could you!”
The more people buy it, the more normal it will become to pay for a virtual horse… free content updates go down, and the item shop becomes more common. More things become “optional”, and well, Blizzard capitalizes on greed and

…. makes probably extremely much monetary net gain with this silly horse, incredibly much more than with providing an expansion that costs so much more time and money to produce.

My suggestion? If anyone wants to throw away 25 bucks, please choose a cause where it will be worthwhile, instead of lining Activisions gold pockets with more cash.

    Support a Cause instead

    Thank you
